Sport and Activities

Golf
Follow in the footsteps of the stars of the 2010 Ryder Cup by playing one of Celtic Manor's three courses.  Other courses in the region include Royal Porthcawl, one of the toughest links in the country when the wind starts blowing in off the sea.  You can also try the course with the longest hole at Dewstow (690 yards and the only par 6 in the UK) or the highest course at West Monmouthshire which reaches 1518ft above sea level.

Surfing

With the wind blowing in off the Atlantic, Porthcawl is home to some of the  best surfing beaches in the country.  The town's Rest Bay and Coney Beach are  the most popular, whilst hardened surfers head for the more secluded Sker Bay.

If you've never surfed before, then there are plenty of operators locally who offer lessons throughout the year.  They'll have you riding the waves in no time.

Adventure Sport
Try your hand at quad biking, paintballing or the challenging high ropes course at the Adventures Centre near Porthcawl. Off site activities include surfing, gorge walking and Stand Up Paddle surfing.

Mountain Biking
Are you up for a challenge? Well in this neck of the woods they don't come much bigger than Mountain Biking at the acclaimed Cwmcarn Forest near Caerphilly.

The Mynydd track is full of steep drops, tight turns and huge jumps taken at break-neck speeds seems to be impossible.  It has been rated as a Black track, which means it is officially classed as severe and should only be tackled by experienced riders. You daren't take your eyes off the track, which is a shame as the views from the top are stunning.

Cwmcarn is also home to the Twrch Train - an equally challenging, tough 15.5km singletrack route through woodlands and on to open ridge tops.  Hold on tight.
